In 1986, when I shifted from TV to 10 years on Radio with Perry & Price, I could share my feelings about community needs and how Rotary and other organizations I was involved in were making a positive difference. I am honored to have served as Rotary Club of Honolulu President 1994-95 and District Governor 2000-01. (I recall going to the international Governors’ training…one of 24 women out of around 525 male Governors.)
I was born in New York City 77 years ago, raised in Portland, Oregon, and graduated from U of O with a broadcast journalism degree in 1969. After the first TV News manager in Portland I approached for a job told me to comeback “when you’ve had more experience and a sex change operation”…my pissed-off grandma sent me to Hawaii for a graduation present. And I never left. (Ironically, years later that same CBS Portland manager called my boss, Bob Sevey in 1981, and asked for me to come to Hawaii to be the first female on the news. Sevey agreed on a 2-year contract…during which I took Kirk Matthews’ anchor job. We fell in love, and with a ring on my finger, dragged his okole back to Hawaii with me.) I’ve lived the loves of my life…Kirk, my work, and my Rotary Ohana…and I look forward to rolling up my sleeves at our next project, having a meeting lunch or Pau Hana, and getting to know you.
