There are scores of babies who may never have had the joy of hugging their moms, were it not for Kandie George. She most recently works in the Neonatal Intensive Care units at both Kapiolani Medical Center and Queen’s Hospital as a Neonatologist Perinatal Palliative Care Specialist…working to save our sickest and highest at-risk babies and babies to be. Kandie is 41, single, and never had kids of her own. “I feel joy for the parents I have worked with.”
She was raised in Trinidad Tobago and went from teaching high school students to medical studies in Grenada, England, New York and back and forth until graduation, experience in the field, and eventual invitation to practice on Oahu. Kandie recalled her time with Rotaractors in her hometown, and her knowledge of Service Above Self drew her to exploring Rotary clubs in Honolulu. Lyla Berg was our club’s contact and eventual sponsor. Kandie has been a member for 2 years.
“My mantra came from Mahatma Gandhi: ‘Be the change that you wish to see in this world’. And I also embrace the notion of ‘do not complain about things - take action’.” Kandie can see the instant gratification of Service Above Self, and she already has volunteered at Rotary’s Centennial Park with Honolulu club members, and at our RYSE projects. Her passion is to help empower women in the Micronesian community here, and with Rotary, she hopes to find a way.
