Forward, Together: Hawai'i Public Radio, 100% Community Supported

Meredith is the President and CEO of Hawaiʻi Public Radio, a community-backed public service that informs the people of Hawai’i with essential news, inspires through the power of music and the arts, and connects through conversations.

She leads the team that serves the people of Hawaiʻi via HPR-1 and HPR-2, the only broadcast radio network that spans the state, plus an expanding portfolio of digital offerings, and a range of community events and gatherings.

After federal funding to public media was rescinded in July of 2025, HPR became for the first time in its history 100% community supported. Backed by a record-breaking number of supporters, HPR is moving forward with strength in its first full year without federal money as a model of independent local media.

In addition to working with the team and community to successfully navigate the loss of federal funding, hallmarks of Meredith’s leadership at HPR include new local programming and podcasts, popular newsletters like the Akamai Recap and the HPR Social Club, and the “Live From the Atherton” events series featuring local musicians and authors. And, this past year the stations of HPR became the most listened to across the islands, and HawaiiPublicRadio.org was voted best news site in Hawaiʻi.

Meredith has a track record of leading prominent organizations through successful digital transformations, and of building and directing high-performing teams around the world.

As the former Editor in Chief and SVP of CNN Digital, Meredith led CNN to become the #1 brand for news on the internet. She ran a team of hundreds of journalists, grew audiences to more than 20 million users a day, managed a $100+ million budget, and advanced CNN’s shift to a multi-platform news organization.

After 12+ years at CNN, she moved to Hawaiʻi in 2022 with her family. Soon after, she served as the Interim Executive Director and Executive in Residence of the Doris Duke Foundation’s Shangri La Museum.

Meredith has also built and led digital teams at The Los Angeles Times, the Paris-based International Herald Tribune, and The New York Times.

She is a former president of the board for the Online News Association, a former member of the Aspen Institute’s Knight Commission on Trust, Media and Democracy, and of Harvard’s Shorenstein Center Commission on Misinformation. She was a fellow of the Sulzberger Executive Leadership program at Columbia University, and delivered the commencement address for her alma mater, the University Missouri School of Journalism.

Meredith has delivered keynote talks around the world, been honored with the ONA Founder’s award and led teams that have won Pulitzers, Emmys, Peabodys and Webby awards.

Her home base is in Waimea on Hawaiʻi Island, with her husband Naka Nathaniel and teenage son Kai.
