For those who knew him I am sad to share that Dave Benson passed away peacefully at home yesterday morning, April 2.

More details to come on service location, date and time. Early June at Borthwick Mortuary most likely.

Donations in remembrance of Dave can be sent to the Bobby Benson Center at bobbybenson.org or:

He faced and persisted through many challenges in his lifetime, with the final one being ALS.

Among many things: He was born on Moloka'i, had a Model-T, lived in a house where the Pali Highway now runs, body surfed Makapu'u, played ukulele by ear, served in the Honolulu Police Department for 30 years, was the Honolulu Marathon race director, founded the Bobby Benson Center, did my 4:45AM paper route a couple times, and taught me stick shift by handing me some truck keys and said "take that back". He had some great stories. He impacted a tremendous amount of people and organizations.

In the ironies life writes, he became a father figure to me, child of a single mom, around the same time he lost his two sons Bobby and Mike at young ages. He was good to me and I am grateful for his presence and aloha over the many years.

He will be missed.
