As you read through the Events, please note that there are a few Volunteer posts! Who likes BEER?! Who likes to keep Keiki safe?! I bet you just said, "ME!" or "I do!" These two events are on the same day, but are not in conflict with the timing. So, mark your calendars for Saturday, January 25th to volunteer for the morning shift at Keiki Safe Zone during the Chinatown Festivals, and the evening to pour beverages at the Annual Winter Beer Fest!
A third volunteer event is in partnership with Literacy Hawaii. We are seeking volunteers to read and craft with kids one Saturday a month. See more information below!
This week's guest speaker is Carla Houser, Executive Director of RYSE (Residential Youth Services and Empowerment). We have been working with RYSE on several projects this year to improved the quality and safety of the housing. You have heard a few presentations from us, now we get to hear from the other side! The Hawaii Immigrant Justice Center (HIJC) at the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii provides free legal services to eligible indigent immigrants living in the State of Hawaii. We also conduct community outreach and education, host free legal clinics, and provide training on a variety of immigration and related civil rights issues. We provide legal assistance to:
Immigrant victims of domestic violence, human trafficking, sexual assault, and victims of other violent crimes by obtaining VAWA Self Petitions, Battered Spouse Waivers, T and U nonimmigrant visas, and other immigration relief.
Immigration assistance to citizens of the Freely Associated States.
Reunite families, including reuniting families separated by human trafficking and abuse.
Immigrant victims of crime in removal proceedings.
Legal permanent residents who want to naturalize to become US citizens.
Immigrants seeking to renew or replace documents, e.g., green card or naturalization certificate.
Immigrants with limited English proficiency by advocating for equal access to government and government-funded services.
