As noted during our lunch meeting on Tuesday, we had an incredible RAT Pack service project last Saturday at the Susannah Wesley Community Center (SWCC). Many thanks to Past President Tom Coyne, Community Service Director Nancy Youngren and RAT Pack leader emeritus Reese Liggett for reviewing, organizing and executing such a great project. I also want to thank Oliver Bartlmae for inviting a large contingent of young people to help us make such great progress. Thanks also to Ian Wetherell, Jim Harrow and Paul Saito for bringing out family members to share in the service and fellowship of the event. Finally, thanks to all who brought power washers to help with the cleaning, including Paul, Dave Shanahan and former member Sage Price.
Speaking of our recent lunch meeting, I would also like to thank Nalani Blaisdell-Brennan for inviting and introducing our speaker Denise Yamaguchi who gave a comprehensive presentation of the upcoming Hawaii Food & Wine Festival and its relationship to the tourism landscape in Hawaii. We also introduced a new feature of our meeting agenda that I’m calling “Rotary Minute” in which I hope to share with both recent and long-time members some of the many important aspects of Rotary International that our Club should embody. If you have any thoughts or suggestions as to which elements of Rotary deserve to be highlighted, please reach out to me or to Lee, and we will consider them for future meetings.
And speaking of future meetings, I’m hoping that many of you will be joining us next week at the Pacific Club for a presentation by Gen. Moses Kaoiwi, Jr., Retired US Brigadier General and Owner/President of INDO-PAC Strategic Consulting, LLC. He will be discussing the Battle of Nuuanu, fought in May 1795, which was a key conflict in the final days of King Kamehameha I's wars to unify rule of the Hawaiian Islands. Erik Soderholm will be introducing the General, Nancy White will be greeting, and Rich Proctor will lead us in song. I look forward to meeting all of you there.

In Memory of Master Genshitsu Sen
Master Sen of the Kyoto Club passed away. He was very supportive of our club and gave a generous contribution to our Centennial Park.
He was the world master of the tea ceremony which he performed for our club numerous times during his visits both here and in Kyoto.
Our hearts go out to our Kyoto Sister Club, Master Sen's family and loved ones. We have been honored to have time with him.
Dr. Genshitsu Sen, a former WWII kamikaze pilot trainee who turned to the Way of Tea, practicing harmony, respect, purity and more, died last week at age 102.
The Rotary Club of Honolulu has taken on a new community service project by helping the Susanah Wesley Community Center to upgrade their facilities. For those of you who are not familiar with this facility, SWCC offers after school care for children in the community as well adult day care and many other vital needed services. It has been a few decades since RCOH has helped here and with limited and diminished funding for these needed services it is time for us to do want we do best and help get this building repaired and cleaned up.
Saturday, Aug. 16th a great deal of cleaning, scraping, and power washing was completed! Painting has begun! Join us Aug. 30th!

Bring your painting attired and a water bottle, wear a hat and gloves. Mostly painting and hopefully, if we enough people, completed the first stage in our project.
