It has been a busy week in Rotary for me on several fronts, even though we did not have a regular meeting. Working backwards from today, there was a great deal of effort devoted to organizing our Pau Hana this evening at the University of Hawaii Men’s Volleyball game against California State University at Northridge (CSUN). I want to give a special shout out to Immediate Past President Tom Coyne and District Governor Elect Nominee Rich Proctor for helping me to get that across the finish line. Earlier on Wednesday of this week, I attended (together with Rick Tabor) a regular meeting of the Eco Rotary Club of Kaka'ako to hear from their winner of the HRYF Scholarship and one of the Pacific Buddhist Academy students that they supported to attend RYLA. It was very inspirational to hear both young people describe their goals and thank the attended Rotarians for their support. Tuesday, I joined Don Anderson, Reese Liggett, Rick Towill and Tom for a discussion with Senior Executive Director of Camp Erdman, Mish Hood, to learn about the devastating impact of the recent storms and how that would change our Camp Erdman work weekend at the beginning of May. Finally, just because I didn’t have enough to do, we had our monthly meeting of Club Presidents from across the district with our District Governor Nancy Cabral on Monday evening. One of the major topics we discussed was the District Conference, which this year will be in August. More information to come, but I encourage everyone to consider attending, as it will be on Oahu.
I noticed on Facebook that Sam Haas was able to attend the Hawaii FiDo charity event this past Sunday. I had hoped to be able to go myself, but circumstances did not permit. So, I’m glad that we had at least one representative of the Club attending. Thanks, Sam! I’m sure that the dogs and their trainers appreciated your support. I’m sure that many of you are already aware of this but just being present in the community and supporting those who we have helped and those who have come to speak at our regular meetings is an excellent way to maintain our relevance across Oahu. I encourage everyone to engage with these opportunities when they make themselves available. You should all proudly represent The Rotary Club of Honolulu.
Next Tuesday (April 21), we will once again be meeting at The Pacific Club for our regular lunch opportunity for fellowship and education. Our speaker will be Doug Harper, the Executive Director of Mālama Maunalua, who will give us an update on their efforts to restore and protect Maunalua Bay. And then the following Saturday (April 25) will be our Rotarians at Work Service Day at Hamakua Marsh. I look forward to seeing many of you at both events.
RCOH member Samantha Haas is always out and about! This time she spent an evening with Hawaii FiDo. From her social media post on FB she shared that she "had a fabulous Sunday [April 12] night celebrating the amazing @hawaiifido organization." Sam, thanks for being a rockstar out in our community!
