From what I heard, our recent meeting with Dr. Jill Omori, Director of the Office of Medical Education at JABSOM, highlighting the Houseless Outreach and Medical Education (HOME) Project was well received. Sadly, I was not able to join by Zoom, primarily due to the extreme shift in time zones between Hawaii and Taiwan. I was actually trying to manage three different time zones between the Rotary International Convention (RICON) in Taipei, our Club and my family activities in Honolulu, and my “day job” with IBM Marketing that continues in New York. Occasionally, I was not able to juggle all three of them successfully. However, I see that several folks attended that I have not mentioned in a while, including Greg Lui-Kwan, Julia Allen, Nancy Grekin, Nalani Blaisdell-Brennan, Nancy Lui-Kwan, Carol Sakata, Wes Yamamoto, Leslie Allen, Jason Ebe and Mitch D'Olier. I’m glad to see that we had a healthy group.
As you may have noticed, we are quickly approaching the end of my Rotary year as President of our Club and the beginning of a new era as Carolann Biederman takes the gavel (and the bell) for our next year. We had a very productive time at RICON together planning and strategizing for her term which begins on July 1. It is my sincere hope that she will be as prepared as we can manage leading into her leadership of our amazing Club. We have already discussed a number of new ideas that she has for building an even more engaging Club experience for all members, and I am very excited to be working with her in the coming year (along with the rest of her leadership team) to bring them to life for everyone’s benefit.
Next week, we will hear from the Mayor of Kauai, Derik Kawakami, who will tell us about the happenings on that island from his perspective. The Mayor will be joining us thanks to an invitation extended by Terry George, so we thank Terry for giving us an opportunity to hear from another of our state’s important leaders. Please be aware as you consider the questions that you may want to ask during the Talk-Story format on Tuesday that we have invited the Mayor as a current member of our state leadership, and not as a candidate for any future office. I have requested that the Mayor’s staff be informed that any campaign-oriented discussion will be strongly discouraged, and I ask that the Club’s members also respect that restriction. With that said, I look forward to seeing many of you Tuesday for what I hope will be an interesting opportunity to learn about events on Kauai.
We had seven members (and family) of our club attend: Brian Dunkel, Carolann Beiderman, Nancy Youngren & Rich Proctor, Paul Saito (Sybil Saito), Hai Cha Lambert (Victor Lambert), and Jim Harrow (Tammy & Emma Harrow).
The Rotary Club of Honolulu is excited to share a meaningful new service opportunity for our members through our partnership with The Pantry by Feeding Hawaiʻi Together. This initiative gives Rotarians the chance to organize volunteer groups directly from their workplaces and spend a day giving back to our community by helping support Hawaiʻi families experiencing food insecurity. The Pantry is Hawaiʻi’s only year-round e-commerce food pantry, providing free, nutritious food to local households in need.
Participating is simple: gather coworkers or employees from your workplace, have each participant sign up for a volunteer shift, and Rotary will donate $50 per volunteer per shift to The Pantry. This is a wonderful way to combine team building, community service, and philanthropy while strengthening Rotary’s impact across Honolulu. We encourage all members to consider bringing together a workplace team and joining us in this hands-on effort to feed our community and support an outstanding local nonprofit organization.
