A MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT BRIAN DUNKEL

Aloha kakou,

Once again, we had a wonderful regular meeting this week at the Oahu Country Club. I have had a number of people tell me how much they enjoyed our own Ananda Ferreira’s presentation of the many important, if not so well known, figures of our island’s history in the care of the Oʻahu Cemetery Association.  Among others, I was pleased to connect at the meeting with Jason Ebe, Jessica Lani Rich, Nik Jirikowic, Don Anderson, Rick Tabor, Nancy Grekin, Carol Sakata and Hai Cha LambertLinda Coble and Bob Sigall also both contributed their respective talents.  Following the regular meeting, we had an inspiring discussion between those giving their time to our Membership Committee, including Wes Yamamoto, Greg Lui-Kwan, Bridget Townsend, Ian Wetherell and Michael Marsh.  As a result of that discussion, I think that we have an excellent plan for developing our growing pipeline of prospective members that we want to encourage to join our amazing Club.

At the regular meeting, Lucci Pinoliad gave an update on the upcoming international project in the Philippines and encouraged members of the Club to sign up to participate.  Also coming in February, we are working to have a Pau Hana event at a UH Wahine Basketball game.  Look for more information on that soon.  Finally, I attended yesterday a meeting of the Board of Trustees for the Foundation of the Rotary Club of Honolulu.  As you all know, we are currently in the midst of the Foundation’s annual Service above Self campaign of giving, and it was shared with the Trustees that although we are in very good shape to reach or even surpass our financial goal, we are disappointingly (my word) behind on the number of Club members who have pledged or given in support of the SaS campaign this year.  As I said to those who have attended the past few meetings, I really do want our Club to succeed in the Rotary International goal of “Every Rotarian”, particularly “This Year”.  If you have not already, please take a look at the letter and pledge form that each of you should have received.  If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or any member of the SaS team.

Next week we will be joined back at The Pacific Club by Terry George, CEO and President of Hawaii Community Foundation.  The topic of his talk will be "Working for a Better Hawai‘i: The Hawai‘i Community Foundation".  I look forward to seeing many of you there for what I’m sure will be an interesting and informative discussion.
