A MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT CAROLANN BIEDERMAN
Aloha mai kākou,
It was my pleasure to welcome Rotarians, former members, guests and speaker Jason Chang, President and CEO of The Queen’s Health Systems, to our lively meeting last Tuesday. Special mahalo to Gale Warshawsky from the Rotary Club of Waikīkī, creator of my vintage Rotary mu‘umu‘u, Rob Hale for hosting prospective member Jim Duca, Past President Mel Kaneshige, and Volodymyr Artyomenko, member of the Rotary Club of Odessa International.
Health care challenges and opportunities, both local and international, were the program focus. Jason Chang outlined plans for the Queen’s new West Hawai‘i regional health care campus, designed to address some of the statewide patient care challenges. He also shared his perspective on the proposed One Health Hawai‘i plan.
Dr. Artyomenko presented a different set of challenges as a practicing doctor amid drone attacks, resource scarcity and the active war in Ukraine. He has come to Honolulu as an Invited International Faculty Member and Visiting Professor at UH JABSOM and presenter at the Global Summit on Perinatal Medicine and Women's Health. What better inspiration to practice peace every day than to hear firsthand from this dedicated Rotarian who continues to heal patients and restore hope. Did you see this week’s TV news and social media about our Club’s role in the new fence construction at Centennial Park Waikīkī? Click here for the HNN link and State Rep. Adrian Tam’s Facebook shout-out to Rotary.
Please join us tomorrow for our first Community Service project at the Kokokahi YWCA on Kāne‘ohe Bay Drive. Click for details. The following Saturday, August 8, is set for exterior painting at Palama Settlement, another hands-on opportunity to experience Service Above Self.
Our next Pacific Club meeting is Tuesday, August 4, featuring Ben Weitz, Executive Director of the Doris Duke Foundation’s Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design, the magnificent private estate that’s become a unique museum and cultural center in Kahala.
I hope to see you at the Kokokahi YWCA tomorrow and next Tuesday at the Pacific Club!
Mahalo nui loa,

Carolann Biederman
President
The Rotary Club of Honolulu
