A MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT BRIAN DUNKEL

Aloha kakou,

Although we had no regular meeting this week at the Pacific Club, I think that it is safe to say that our Thursday Pau Hana at La Mariana Sailing Club was a great success.  I want to thank Judy Lind for organizing the event and thank everyone who came out to join us (including Dennis Lind) and the several folks who brought guests and possible future Rotarians.  I had a great discussion with three guests of Nalani Blaisdell-Brennan and a friend of Ian Wetherell, at least a couple of whom I’m optimistic might join our club.  In my capacity as parking attendant and pedestrian guide, I was happy to greet several members including Leslie Allen, Don Anderson and his wife Susan, Hai Cha Lambert and her husband Victor, Oliver Bartlmae and Reese Liggett. I also had a chance to chat (even if briefly) with several club members throughout the event, including Dawn Marie, Kent Reinker, Nancy Grekin, Michael Marsh, Bridget Townsend as well as others.  Many hands were raised when participants were polled whether they would come to another Pau Hana at the same location (although perhaps in the winter when the sun is not quite so intense and the breeze is more energetic).

We have an amazing group of people who are the members of the Rotary Club of Honolulu.  I very much enjoy the time spent in fellowship and in service with all of our members and friends.  I am more connected to my community here than I have ever been to any community in my life, and I attribute that to the relationships I have developed as a member of this Club.  I’m excited by the energy that I see before, during and after our regular meetings, and I look forward to the many service projects we will share in the coming year.  Thank you all for your support as we continue forward into the Rotary year.

Speaking of service projects, several of us will be attending our first RAT Pack project of the new Rotary year at the Susannah Wesley Community Center (SWCC) tomorrow.  If you have not yet signed up to join us for a satisfying day of cleaning and preparation for painting, there will be another opportunity to participate in our second round, Saturday the 30th.

Note we will return for our regular lunch meeting at the Pacific Club on Tuesday, followed by our August Board meeting.  Our speaker will be Denise Hayashi Yamaguchi, who will share information about the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival this Fall.  Our November 4 and November 11 meetings will be held at the Inspiration Hawaii Museum, which is a captivating space on the ground floor lobby of the former HECO building – built in 1927 – at 900 Richards Street near Iolani Palace and the old Post Office.  We have held several previous lunch meetings at this venue, and I look forward to seeing many of you there in November.

WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS!

Aloha All,

The Rotary Club of Honolulu has taken on a new community service project by helping the Susanah Wesley Community Center to upgrade their facilities.  For those of you who are not familiar with this facility, SWCC offers after school care for children in the community as well adult day care and many other vital needed services.  It has been a few decades since RCOH has helped here and with limited and diminished funding for these needed services it is time for us to do want we do best and help get this building repaired and cleaned up.

Start Date:

Saturday, August 16th at 8:30:

  • We will need as many power washers as possible so please respond to this email if you have or have access to a power washer.  If we can get 4 to 6 then we can most of the work completed in half a day.
  • There are many other areas that will need painting so bring your painting attire, wear a hat and gloves and also bring your water bottle.

Saturday, August 30th at 8:30:

  • Mostly painting and hopefully, if we enough people, completed the first stage in our project.
