This week we were delighted to have Crystal Rose, President of the Board, and Jack Wong, CEO of Kamehameha Schools speak to us about the history of the school and its future in the face of the ongoing political challenges that many similar institutions face. It was incredibly well attended, to the point that an extra small table needed to be added in order for Michelle Dolan, Clif Purkiser, Bub Wo, and Jim Harrow to be able to sit. Of course, Rick Towill was there to support his wife Crystal, and we were also graced with the presence of Oliver Bartlmä despite his still being in recovery from a very unfortunate hiking accident last year. I was also pleased to have many of our regular attendees like Julia Allen, Richard Hunter, Judy Lind, Rob Hale and Tom Coyne, as well as some of our more occasional (but still valued) attendees like Nalani Blaisdell-Brennan, Craig Robinson, Leslie Allen and Dennis Lind.
For my Rotary Minute this week, I noted that January is Vocational Service month, and I encourage each of you to consider how you can take the values of Rotary back into your professional life, as well as what your vocational talents can contribute to Rotary and our Club. Also of note is the fact that January 1st was the first day of our yearly Service Above Self campaign of giving that continues through the end of March. Bob Sumpf announced the campaign, and I made a personal request to everyone in the Club that we ALL contribute at least some amount to our Service funds as you are able. As noted by Liz Howard in a follow up email, donations to the Service Above Self campaign allow us to be incredibly generous and effective in our projects and support of our local and global community. Liz, of course, joined us via Zoom, as did Alika Mau and Shannon Melton.
As I mentioned at the end of our meeting and as described in a recent email from Lee, next week is Restaurant Week, and we have three great opportunities for lunch and fellowship throughout the week and across the island. Tuesday is at the Dixie Grill and BBQ in Aiea; Wednesday is at Moku Kitchen in SALT Kaka’ako (which is filling up fast); and Thursday will be at Kona Brewing in Hawaii Kai. I will be coordinating all three events, so I hope to see many of you there to enjoy the food and company. Feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions or special requests. All three venues were chosen for their attractive menus and ample parking.
Seating: 8-10 seats reserved for each location - if slots are filled and you wish to attend, let your Administrator know and we will ask the venue to accommodate more.
The Foundation of the Rotary Club of Honolulu asks for your financial support just once a year.
Your donation can be designated to the fund of your choice: Maile Hale Endowment Fund, John Warren Project Fund, Will Henderson Scholarship Endowment Fund, and the Paul Harris Fund for Rotary International Projects, including polio.
You can also allow the Foundation trustees to determine where your gift best meets the Club’s goals. Once your donation is allocated, you receive credit towards a fellowship in that fund.
Payment options include checking, credit card, stock donation, and paying in two installments.
