Aloha Rotary Club of Honolulu members and friends,
On this last Tuesday's meeting we were honored to have retired Judge Patrick Yim as our speaker. He and his associate Jim Wright presented a very informative talk on the life and legacy of Hawaii Princess Abigail Kinoiki Kekaulike Kawanakoa. Hearing about her life and the Hawaiian Royalty that she grew up with, gave us some insight into Hawaii during the early 1900's when Hawaii was changing in many ways.
I look forward to seeing you this Tuesday, Aug. 27th at the Outrigger where we will hear from our State Legislator Kim Coco Iwamoto.
Your District Learning Facilitators have two important sessions planned this Saturday, August 24.
First, at 9 a.m., weʻll have a presentation on International Service projects and Global Grants led by District International Service Chair James Ham and Global Grants Sub-Committee Chair Arjun Aryal. If you have interest in being involved in International Service projects or Global Grants, this is the best place to learn the basic information.
At 10 a.m., we'll switch over to a mandatory Youth Protection workshop led by District Youth Protection Chair, Peter Evans. Every club in our District is required to send at least one person from their club. Your club's attendance at this workshop meets the Rotary International requirement to work with youth programs such as RYLA.

“My Life as a Successful Transgender Person in Hawaii.”
In 2006, when Kim Coco Iwamoto was elected to the Board of Education, Hawaii became the first state in the nation to elect an openly transgender person to a statewide office; she was re-elected in 2010 with 25% more votes. Iwamoto went on to serve as a Commissioner on the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission. In 2013, the Obama White House honored her as a Champion of Change. Iwamoto is an attorney, small business owner and Co-Founder of the Chamber of Sustainable Commerce, which now has over 500 members statewide. Iwamoto lives in Kakaako with her 11-year-old daughter Rory, a proud student of Queen Kaahumanu Elementary School.

Parking at the Outrigger is still limited to Outrigger Canoe Club members with decals only as of June 10.
Please be patient and kind with the Outrigger staff. We will continue to keep you updated as Outrigger gives us information.
Alternate Parking: There is usually ample parking around Kapiolani Park on Kalākaua Avenue at only 25 cents per half hour (coin meters - so bring quarters!) For those who can walk a little further, Paki Avenue on the mauka side of the park has free parking with no time limit.
Please let President Tom Coyne know if you have mobility issues or need assistance with parking and he will connect you with members who can provide assistance.

We are looking for good community service projects!
Are you affiliated with or know of a non-profit organization that could benefit from RCOH volunteers? If so, please complete the Service Project Recommendation form and give it to Lee.
The Community Service Committee will review all suggestions and will make recommendations to the Board.

PLEASE preregister to attend if at all possible. We are required to give a headcount to the venue.
ALL WALK-INS - member or not - pay $50.
Do NOT assume I know you are attending. Exception is for Members who have opted for the Prepaid Lunch Plans.
Prepaid Member Lunches: One of the perks of prepaying for your lunches is automatic registration for the meeting, even if you do not attend.
Make Up Meetings: Please email me the date and location/Club you attended. If you do not alert me, I cannot give you Attendance Credit. Many of us like to patron other clubs, so please inform me when you do so I can credit you. This also helps with our overall attendance record.
