We had a very moving presentation by James Pakele at our August 6th meeting, especially knowing that he was dealing with the recent loss of a great human being and mentor Twinkle Borges. I believe Past President Terry George put it best when he noted that James showed great strength to come from the Village in Waianae to The Outrigger Canoe Club in Waikiki to speak to our Club and he did because he knew this is what Twinkle would have wanted.
Also, please be sure to sign-up for one of our Paul Harris events happening next week. This is another excellent way to get to know your fellow Rotarians.

Welcome newest Rotarian, Antonet Barut!
The Rotary Club of Honolulu is happy to announce the induction of their newest member, Antonet Barut. Antonet is in Real Estate and was inducted into our Club this past Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024.
Antonet is outgoing and friendly! She has been attending RCOH and assisting with projects for a while, and she has already signed up to assist with some of the weekly meeting duties!
Congratulations Sangkoo Yun, RI President Nominee for FY2026-2027!
The Rotary Club of Honolulu would like to publicly congratulate the nomination of Sangkoo Yun as RI President nominee for FY2026-2027.
Sangkoo Yun, of the Rotary Club of Sae Hanyang, Seoul, Korea, is the selection of the nominating committee to become Rotary International’s president for 2026-27.
For RCOH this is extra special as he will be president when the Rotary International Convention is here in Honolulu!
Our Final Long-term Disaster Recovery (LTDR) Plan. It’s public domain now. So, let’s use it.
Like everything, there’s a few stories behind this latest WE>ME accomplishment. Sometimes I hear people say ‘You have a problem saying no. You’re stretched too far.’ To which, I smile & you’ll hear me reply, ‘Thank you for your concern, but no worries, you have no idea what I’m capable of in my Retirement, because you probably don’t know how active I’ve been, for my entire lifetime.’ ‘Participating is life’s greatest solution!’ ‘Besides, I love the process as much as the outcomes.’ ‘I’ve never said, ‘Someone should do something.’ Nope! I’m going to say, ‘let’s make it happen!’ And clink glasses afterwards.
The trick is ‘Boundaries.’ Something I learned in Graduate School & practice every day of my life. Our Niece once said, ‘Oh I know I said I’m full. But Dessert is a different compartment!’ Ah yes, ‘Compartmentalizing.’ Another life saver. One Zoom ends, Shake it off & onward to the next meeting. We’re all there…
The Lahaina, Maui August 8, 2023, Wildfire burned my father-in-law’s childhood city, while our committee was in the process of developing this plan. We took that serious!
We’ll hope what’s written is never needed, but we also hope folks will use the recommendations if needed. Bottom line is, if lives are saved, people safe, plans work, then we’ve accomplished our targeted outcomes well! On your part; ‘BE PREPARED & AWARE!’ ‘See Something, Say Something.’

Our hearts and souls were heavy to hear of Twinkle's passing. Even with his own deep sadness at Twinkle's absence, we are grateful that James Pakele still attended to share some history and information about Pu'uhonua O Wai'anae.
James was introduced to the community through his wife who is a nurse. Mahalo to his wife for her support!
19th Annual Joint Memorial Service Call to Action Last Weekend in September
Here’s an event we could sure use your help with! This will be our 82nd year honoring our Nisei WWII Veterans. And up until last year, we’ve been short on the help needed to decorate the 2000 graves at Punchbowl. With enough help this is a fun family project. Please come join us and spread the word. Thank you.
Logistics:
Saturday September 28, 2023, 8:30am at Punchbowl. Parking is free and open to the public, except for the reserved spaces on the Mall Drive.
On Saturday, look for the tables, under the tents, with buckets of flowers. Club 100 organizers will assign you to a section, hand you a map, bucket of flowers and flags and off you go, into history, in search of 100th Battalion soldiers. Volunteers are advised to bring sunscreen, a hat, and please stay hydrated. We’ll have water. And no worries, there will be plenty of folks available to help you, so just ask, if needed.
We also need help on
September 30, Monday morning, removing (2000) flags. We’ll start that process at 8:30am.
And on Sunday, September 29 there’s a 9:30am joint memorial service. The service is open to the public. It’s also televised on ‘Ōlelo.
Why September 29th?
The memorial service is held annually on the Sunday September 29 — the day in 1943 that Sgt. Shigeo “Joe” Takata of the 100th Infantry Battalion became the first Japanese American soldier killed in action in World War II. Sgt. Shigeo “Joe” Takata was hit by shrapnel and fought death long enough to point out the location of the enemy, action for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Sgt. Takata rests in eternal peace at Punchbowl.
The Rotary Club of Honolulu's Gift of Sound Committee would like to remind folks of Rotary/Miracle Ear’s ‘Free’ hearing aid program. Please read the Generations Magazine article for more information.

Better yet, all anyone qualifying for a free hearing aid can go to any Miracle Ear in Hawaii. Miracle Ear will contact Rotary for the application fee when needed. Simple, huh?

I was recommended from my grandparents to contact you as they are both Rotary’ans in Denmark and have been members for more than 40 years. My mother has been a Rotary exchange student in New Zealand and all together, we have so many good experiences with Rotary in my whole family.
My grandfather even participated in a meeting in your club 10 years ago, during a holiday in Hawaii.
I’m studying a semester at Hawaii Pacific University this fall, and will arrive in Honolulu August 20th. Unfortunately I was just informed, that the apartment, I was expected to live in with two other girls (from Denmark and Norway) is a scam ☹
I therefore contact you in hope, that someone in your club might know someone, that knows someone, or maybe you just have some advice for me, in this unfortunate situation. At the moment everything is appreciated.
My name is Nicoline Fog Bach, I’m 22 years old and studies at Copenhagen Business School. I am calm, very orderly and 100% reliable.
I’m now trying to find an apartment for myself, and if possible, also the 2 other girls (age 28 and 23) in the area around Kaka’Ako, Ala Moana, Waikiki, or anywhere close to this. The size/number of bedrooms is not important. Everything has interest. Leasing period would ideally be from mid-August to mid or end of December 2024.
I sincerely hope that a member, or anyone in the club network might be able to help me.

MAGIC THROUGH COMMUNITY SERVICE
We are looking for good community service projects!
Are you affiliated with or know of a non-profit organization that could benefit from RCOH volunteers? If so, please complete the Service Project Recommendation form and give it to Lee.
The Community Service Committee will review all suggestions and will make recommendations to the Board.
Parking at the Outrigger is limited to Outrigger Canoe Club members with decals only as of June 10.
Please be patient and kind with the Outrigger staff. We will continue to keep you updated as Outrigger gives us information.
Alternate Parking: There is usually ample parking around Kapiolani Park on Kalākaua Avenue at only 25 cents per half hour (coin meters - so bring quarters!) For those who can walk a little further, Paki Avenue on the mauka side of the park has free parking with no time limit.
Please let President Tom Coyne know if you have mobility issues or need assistance with parking and he will connect you with members who can provide assistance.

PLEASE preregister to attend if at all possible. We are required to give a headcount to the venue.
ALL WALK-INS - member or not - pay $50.
Do NOT assume I know you are attending. Exception is for Members who have opted for the Prepaid Lunch Plans.
Prepaid Member Lunches: One of the perks of prepaying for your lunches is automatic registration for the meeting, even if you do not attend.
Make Up Meetings: Please email me the date and location/Club you attended. If you do not alert me, I cannot give you Attendance Credit. Many of us like to patron other clubs, so please inform me when you do so I can credit you. This also helps with our overall attendance record.
Incoming President Tom Coyne has been working closely with our current and 2025 Club Treasurer Lucci Pinoliad, as well as with current President Joanna Amberger to finalize our budget for 2025. With membership staying steady at 117 members and with inflation increasing the cost of operating the club, we have little choice but to implement an increase for our membership dues. The chart shows the current dues rate and the new dues rate effective July 1, 2024.
