This past weekend we brought our RYSE service project to a close. For me, it was a great reminder of the two key reasons I am a member of Rotary - service and fellowship! Hands on projects like RYSE are a great opportunity to get to know your fellow Rotarians more deeply while giving back. If you have an idea for a service project, we are looking for champions for projects. Connect with Community Service Team Leaders Bob Sumpf and Darrah Kauhane to discuss your idea!
We are working to make registering and attending lunch meetings easier on our members. To that end we are introducing some new changes to registration:
Register and pay online - starting with our February 27 lunch meeting, anyone registering for an event will be asked to pay with a credit card at the time of registration. This will make it easier to register by reducing the number of times you have to click. It will also reduce you wasting time standing in line waiting to pay. If you register online, just pick up your name tag, grab lunch and fellowship with other Rotarians and guests! Registration closes 24 hours before the event.
Walk-ins welcome for a fee - we welcome walk-ins and know some of you don't know if you can make it until the last minute. Please join us! But, that flexibility, convenience and privilege are not free. We will be charging $50 at the door for members and guests who do not pre-register. This will take effect starting at the March 5 lunch meeting.
Sign up for prepaid lunches - we know some of our members are tired of having to register and pay for individual lunches. We hear you! So we are offering a prepaid lunch option on a trial basis. You can sign up for $130 a month or $500 for the rest of the Rotary year. This option gives you even more freedom to attend the lunch meetings without having to hassle with online registration! 'Olelo Youth Exchange Video Contest 2024
Creating Peace
In 2008 the Rotary Club of Honolulu decided to sponsor a category in the 'Olelo Youth Xchange video contest. The Youth Xchange program includes 13 categories mostly relating to public service. All entries are between 30 seconds to 5 minutes long. Since one of the basic tenants of Rotary is “Peace through understanding”, we thought it appropriate to sponsor the “Creating Peace” category. Over the years we’ve seen some very impressive and thought-provoking videos created by students from elementary through high school grades. Before Covid the Creating Peace category was the most popular. We received over 130 entries. At the 'Olelo awards ceremony we are able to promote Rotary to over 400 people who attend. We are also able to provide a special program for the division winners at one of our luncheon meetings. Students and parents are invited. One of the best things our participation does is give students the challenge of coming up with their own solutions as to how to make their world a more peaceful place.
Want to help view and judge the videos? We need 6-10 people who are willing to help. After preliminary viewing and narrowing down the choices, we will come together as a group on March 9 to choose the winners in each category, as a group.

Mufi Hannemann has served the community of Hawai‘i for decades in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. He is the President & CEO of the Hawaiʻi Lodging & Tourism Association, the state’s oldest and largest private sector tourism association with about 700 member organizations, representing more than 50,000 hotel rooms and nearly 40,000 lodging workers.
I was sleeping off the Saturday RYSE Rotary Project Sunday, when a late morning phone call woke me up. It was Rotarian Michael Marsh, answering my request for an interview. What a great way to start the day!

Art gave us a fabulous presentation on the upcoming and ongoing changes surrounding the redevelopment of Straub. The renderings of what the grounds and buildings should look like when completed are stunning. Most of all, it will give more medical space to help our community!
