I began the week with an incredible RYLA camp experience, joined at Camp Erdman by a number of District 5000 Rotarians, including our own Shannon Melton and Rich Proctor on Sunday for graduation, together with around ten district Rotaractors and close to forty high-school aged future leaders from across Oahu. Monday was a necessary day of rest, and then on Tuesday we had a great presentation by Meredith Artley, the President & CEO of Hawai’i Public Radio. I made it a point to touch base with a number of those who were there, including Grace Sheckler, Gigi Davidson, Jack Kunkel, Erik Soderholm, Rick Towill, Jake Jacobs, Bub Wo, Dave Shanahan and Jim Harrow. Thanks to all who were able to join us.
And speaking of joining us, as has been mentioned a number of times lately we have a wonderful problem with our meeting attendance in that we are pretty regularly reaching the limits of our host venue, especially when it comes to parking and kitchen capacity. As such, the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors will be discussing some changes to our process for lunch sign up in the next few weeks. Stay tuned for more important details.
Yesterday evening, the leaders of the Youth Fellows program hosted our first gathering of (almost) the whole group, with six of the seven members of our current cohort (Grace, Jack, Nik Jirikowic, Riley Lau, Christian Stockwell and Oliver Bartlmä by Zoom; Cherokee had a previous engagement, so couldn’t be there) gathering at The Pacific Club to review the status of the program and where the future will take us. It was an excellent opportunity for the group to ask questions and give valuable feedback that will improve both this and our next iteration.
Finally, apologies to everyone who was confused by my message last week about the Pau Hana timing. I was rushing to prepare for RYLA and didn’t carefully consider the ambiguity in English between “next week” and “this week”. However, I can say with confidence that we will have NO regular meeting at The Pacific Club on February 10. (Whether you consider that “this week” or “next week” is up to you!) Rather, we will have what I’m sure will be a fabulous Pau Hana gathering on Thursday, February 12 at J. Dolans in Kahala. If you plan to join us, and parking in front of the venue is tight, I often find space across Waialae in the Kahala Mall lot in front of Ross, and walking back is much less stressful than circling endlessly. As always, I look forward to seeing many of you there!
