A MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT BRIAN DUNKEL

Aloha kakou,

Well, it has been a busy week.  Tuesday, of course, we had our regular lunch meeting at Pacific Club with our speaker Gregory Dunn of the Hawaii Theatre Center.  I want to thank all who were able to join us for lunch, including Jim Harrow who helped Jake Jacobs get to the meeting.  Jake let me know that he had encouraged Gregg to join the Club, and I do plan to follow up on that… I was also able to talk to Christian Stockwell about his offer to learn the ropes for setting up and managing our meeting Zoom technology, so that then our team will have three members.

As part of his presentation, Gregg brought a number of complimentary tickets for the current show at the Hawaii Theatre, Prescription: Murder, starring Pat Sajak and Joe Moore, which many of us enjoyed Thursday and others will see in August. Michael Marsh and Al Linton were at the theater with their guests, and Don Anderson sat directly in front of me with his son Scott.  Serendipitously, my seats were in the same row as the Director and Assistant Director of the production, who both happen to be good friends of my wife from her time designing costumes for the ‘Iolani Dramatic Players.  Lucci Pinoliad and Lee LaBrash joined us, while Greg Lui-Kwan and Nancy Lui-Kwan sat on the other side of the house.

Wednesday evening, we had our celebration of scholarship students supported by the Rotary Club of Honolulu through the funds collected by our Foundation.  We also had a number of the inaugural cohort of the Don Anderson Service Above Self Youth Leadership Fellows program join us, including Oliver Bartlmae, Riley Lau, Cherokee Rice, Jack Kunkel and Christian.  Particular thanks to Paul Saito and his wife Sybil who arranged the venue, as well as to Michelle Dolan (who brought delicious pizza), Tom Coyne (who brought ribs), Reese Liggett (who brought drinks), and Amanda Ellis (who brought her son).  Rounding out the participants were Leslie Allen, Rich Proctor, Don, Jim, Greg and Nancy.  It was a wonderful opportunity to see how our contributions are helping community students and get together in a relaxed environment with fun and fellowship.

Next week, our lunch speaker at the Pacific Club will be Dr. Jerris Hedges, Dean Emeritus of the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) at the University of Hawaii, who will share some “Words of Wisdom”.  I look forward to seeing all of you there at 11:30 for a wonderful meal and great fellowship.

Scope of Project: Brighten up--Refresh this important facility
Prep for painting (power wash, scrape, wire brush, caulk, spackle) PAINT

To Volunteer - contact PP Tom Coyne or Community Service Director Nancy Youngren

Aloha All,

The Rotary Club of Honolulu has taken on a new community service project by helping the Susanah Wesley Community Center to upgrade their facilities.  For those of you who are not familiar with this facility, SWCC offers after school care for children in the community as well adult day care and many other vital needed services.  It has been a few decades since RCOH has helped here and with limited and diminished funding for these needed services it is time for us to do want we do best and help get this building repaired and cleaned up.

Start Date:

Saturday, August 16th at 8:30:

  • We will need as many power washers as possible so please respond to this email if you have or have access to a power washer.  If we can get 4 to 6 then we can most of the work completed in half a day.
  • There are many other areas that will need painting so bring your painting attire, wear a hat and gloves and also bring your water bottle.

Saturday, August 30th at 8:30:

  • Mostly painting and hopefully, if we enough people, completed the first stage in our project.
