A MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT BRIAN DUNKEL

Aloha kakou,

Although we did not have a regular lunch meeting during this Thanksgiving holiday week, last Saturday we once again had a great turn out for our Palama Settlement rail painting project.  Thank you to all who participated both weekends, including Linda Coble, Rich Proctor, Reese Liggett, Nancy Youngren and Jim Harrow.  I also had a productive chat with Hai Cha Lambert about working with our current International Service chair Lucci Pinoliad and President Elect Carolann Biederman to revive the Sister Club sub-committee, given the excitement expressed to me by several of the Club members who participated in the recent Sister Club visits.  I hope that among others, Hiroko Dewitz, Taro Fujisawa and Nancy Pace will also help in that endeavor.

I hope that you all had (and continue to enjoy) a happy Thanksgiving weekend.  I am in Michigan with my family, so I will be watching the Michigan-Ohio State football game tomorrow with my father, for which I am very thankful.  I was also asked to provide a message of thanks to Nancy Cabral, our District Governor, for her Thanksgiving season newsletter, and I wanted to share that here with you.  â€œI am thankful for both The Rotary Club of Honolulu and Rotary District 5000 for the wonderful opportunities to engage with my community through friendship and service. I have never felt as connected as I do here.”  The feeling of ‘ohana that I have with RCOH, as well as the Windward Choral Society with whom I sing together with Ann Miller, anchors me in ways that I am thankful for on a regular basis.

Once the holiday weekend has concluded, next week we will be back at our collective home for lunch at The Pacific Club.  Our speaker will be Rocky Mould, Executive Director of the Hawaii Solar Energy Association (HSEA), and he will be describing his organization’s advocacy efforts promoting solar power, energy storage, and distributed energy resource policies in Hawaii.  I look forward to seeing many of you there, assuming that the airline travel gods smile upon my return trip Monday.

Assistance includes help with parking and managing snack stations, which include shaved ice, hot dogs, and popcorn. The volunteer call time will be at 3:00 PM, and volunteers are asked to stay until 9:00 PM to help with cleanup.

To ensure Palama will have enough volunteer shirts and bentos, they kindly ask that all volunteers sign up by December 5th. Please complete the volunteer form and email it by the deadline. Once Palama has the final list, they will give specific assignments and any additional details.
