Once again, we had a fascinating presentation at the Oahu Country Club by Robert Mann, who is a friend and colleague of Lee LaBrash and her husband at JABSOM UH. We were treated to stories of his many adventures in forensic anthropology around the world. Among other things, we learned that Hawaii has (in conjunction with a site in Nebraska) the world's largest forensic anthropology laboratory, specializing in identifying missing U.S. service members. Staffed by over 150 scientists, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) Laboratory at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam analyzes human remains, dental evidence, and material artifacts using advanced technology, some of which was pioneered by the DPAA. Thanks to Lee and all who joined us for the meeting including Christian Stockwell, who gave us a Vocational Minute describing his work and business activities and our amazing greeter Oliver Bartlemae.
Following our regular meeting, we had a very well attended and productive meeting of the Membership Committee. I want to give a special shout out to all of those members of the Club who are working under the leadership of Tom Coyne to develop a robust pipeline of new and prospective members to help us bring in more amazing people into our Rotary ohana. In attendance were Bridget Townsend, Nina Thai, Wesley Yamamoto, Carolann Biederman, Julia Allen, Michael Marsh and Greg Lui-Kwan. I am very much looking forward to the results of these efforts, which currently includes at least another pair of inductions in the next few weeks. As Tom has said, we have “a great product” in our Club experience.
As a reminder, we will be back at The Pacific Club this Tuesday for a presentation by Dan Haire, President & CEO of Navian Hawai’i discussing hospice and post-acute care in our great state. As was mentioned at the last meeting, this is the first of several upcoming meetings for which we will start implementing a process for managing parking at our wonderful venue. With speakers from organizations like OHA, the City & County of Honolulu, Malama Maunalua and the State of Hawaii, we will definitely have meetings that will strain the parking capacity if we do not manage it appropriately. This Tuesday, we will have an opportunity to pilot our new sign-up system for spaces at The Pacific Club, although we will not be under as much pressure as I’m sure we will see for some of the future meetings. If you have signed up for the next meeting, expect to see something in your email inbox on Monday related to parking. As always, I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Kerri Bosworth Van Duyne
Vice President of Development, YMCA of Honolulu
Kerri Bosworth Van Duyne’s work centers on strategic collaboration to bring together business leaders, government agencies and volunteers to align goals and secure resources. This approach at the YMCA of Honolulu helped to secure $11.5 million in government funding in fiscal year 2024 and $12 million through the Catalyst for Community Campaign for youth mental health, wellness services and a community hub with affordable and workforce housing. She also strengthened donor networks and advanced major campaigns through previous roles at the University of Hawaii Foundation, University of San Diego and California Western School of Law.
“What stands out most about Kerri is her ability to listen, connect and turn shared ideas into tangible results,” Arnold Martines, chairman, president and CEO of Central Pacific Bank and YMCA of Honolulu board chair, wrote in support of her nomination. “She works seamlessly across government, business and nonprofit sectors to build trust and move projects forward.”
She serves on the board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Hawaii chapter and previously was a trustee for the Rotary Club of Honolulu Foundation, where she chaired their annual campaigns and supported community grants.
What was your first paying job and what did you learn from it? “My first paying job was during college. I worked for Liberty House, which is now Macy’s. I did the Christmas rush and retail, and I learned how to be resilient. I learned patience because people fighting over things right before the holidays can be very mean.”
What advice do you have for young women just starting their careers?
“Network, get a mentor so that you know what you’re getting into in whatever profession you choose. … We’re on a mission. We’re trying to do the best we can for our community. It’s really important to have women in the workplace and promote it, and [have women] in board positions and CEO positions.”

As many of our international sister club members will be visiting Taiwan for the Rotary
International Convention 2026, the Rotary Club of Taipei is in the early stages of planning a
Welcome Dinner to celebrate our long-standing friendship and fellowship. We are also
planning to invite all the Rotary International dignitaries, including all the PRIPs, to this event,
so this gathering will also represent a rare opportunity to meet and interact with the Rotary
International VIPs.
The dinner is planned for: Friday, June 12, 2026 (evening) Location: Sheraton Hotel Taipei Grand Ball Room
At this preliminary stage, we would be most grateful if you could kindly let us know whether
your club may be interested in attending, and, if possible, provide a rough estimate of the
number of members who might participate.
This information will greatly assist us in our initial planning and venue arrangements.
Please note that this is only a preliminary inquiry, and a formal invitation with full details will
follow at a later date.
We truly hope to have the opportunity to spend a meaningful evening together in fellowship
during this special Rotary occasion, and we very much look forward to welcoming our sister
clubs to Taipei.
With warm Rotary friendship,
Andrew Wong
