Ulalia Woodside Lee

State Director, Hawaii and Palmyra, The Nature Conservancy,

Climate Resiliency

When Ulalia Woodside Lee took the helm as Hawai‘i executive director in 2016, she felt as if she had been preparing for the job her entire life. The daughter of a wildlife biologist and a Hawaiian cultural practitioner, she grew up in a family dedicated to protecting the environment. “Conservation is what we did,” she says. “It’s what I know and what I’ve made my life’s calling.”

As Hawai‘i executive director, Lee oversees forest and marine conservation programs on five islands and a climate change research laboratory at Palmyra Atoll. She resides in the community of Waimanalo in windward O‘ahu and during her spare time enjoys serving on community organization boards, hula, hiking and traveling.

NOV 26: Hybrid Lunch Meeting
with Guest Speaker, CHRIS BAILEY

CHRIS BAILEY

Wahiawā Value-Added Product Development Center

Chris is the manager of a new 33,000-square-foot manufacturing and teaching facility aims to help entrepreneurs develop marketable food products. Chris understands the value of food, in part from growing up while his mother and aunt ran a Thai restaurant in Waipahu. And he spent time working in the industry in Portland while studying business at Lewis & Clark College, and after.  He understands the impact that is made when more value is added to the food that Hawai‘i’s farmers produce.

The Center had education for entrepreneurs, assists farmers when their crops are abundant or don't meet the criteria for distribution.  Additionally, per Chris, the center includes equipment for manufacturing that startups otherwise could not easily access.  This also includes food-processing and packaging spaces, refrigerated storage and a high-pressure processing system that preserves taste and color while creating products with longer shelf lives.

Join us to learn more about this fascinating business and how it helps our community!
