"The Situation in the Middle East and the US Strategic Interests"
Dr. Jason Olson
Jason is a Navy foreign area officer assigned to the US Pacific Fleet, where he coordinates with partner navies and strengthens interoperability and global stability, including the Pacific Security Maritime Exchange, a multinational coalition that enforces UN Security Council resolutions. He was previously at the Naval War College and received grants to research the Abraham Accords, particularly how they benefit US interests.
Jason holds a doctorate from Brandeis University, is the author of 2 books related to the Middle East and is a professor at BYU-Hawaii. He received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal in 2023.
The Board of Trustees of the Foundation of the Rotary Club of Honolulu nominate the following members to serve a 3-year term as Trustee beginning July 1, 2025. Voting on the slate of candidates will be held at the beginning of the Tuesday, June 4 noon lunch meeting. Please join us in person at the Outrigger Canoe Club or via Zoom to cast your vote and show your support. We need to reach quorum, so even if you can only join for the first 10 minutes of the meetings, we need you there. Come support your fellow members!

Outrigger originally told us parking would be limited starting May 22. This is an evolving situation that we cannot control. We will keep you updated as Outrigger gives us information. Alternate Parking: There is usually ample parking around Kapiolani Park on Kalākaua Avenue at only 25 cents per half hour (coin meters - so bring quarters!) For those who can walk a little further, Jim Harrow alerted us to Paki Avenue on the mauka side of the park that has free parking with no time limit. Please let President Joanna know if you have mobility issues or need assistance with parking and she will connect you with members who can provide assistance. Click here to email her!

Chinese-Australian conductor Dane Lam is Music Director of the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra (assuming the post of Music Director in July 2023) and Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra.
Born in Brisbane, Australia to an Australian mother and a Singaporean-Chinese father, Dane played piano, clarinet, and saxophone as a child, and studied conducting under Gwyn Roberts at the University of Queensland.
He was the first conductor in the history of Opera Queensland to be honoured with an official position when he was appointed their Associate Music Director and Resident Conductor in December 2020.

Greg is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools, UH-Hilo and holds a Ph.D in clinical psychology from UH Manoa. He was appointed Executive Director of Maunakea Stewardship at the University of Hawaii at Hilo in July 2019. He currently serves as a senior advisor to the UH Board of Regents and the UH president on Maunakea.
Greg comes from an unusual background in the private sector. Prior to joining UHM in 2013, he was employed at Kamehameha School where he served as President of Bishop Holdings, the estate's for-profit development and investment subsidiary and later served as Vice president of the Education group and managed a real estate and financial portfolio exceeding $500 million. His other professional experience has spanned electric utilities, land development, ranching, historic preservation , aina-based education, insurance and healthcare. His background includes a specific interests in leadership, organizational development and strategic planning with a strong emphasis on engaging community. He has served as president of the Hawai'i Island Economic Development Board and is active with several Hawai'i Island and Oahu non-profits.

He has written extensively about the racketeering case of former Kamaaina Termite owner, Michael J. Miske, both for his own blog (www.iLind.net) and for Civil Beat, the online news organization. His coverage of the case, going back more than five years, has been second to none.
