President Joanna Amberger's Message
When the well’s dry, we know the worth of water.
~ Benjamin Franklin

Our lunch meeting this week brought home the importance of clean water in our lives.  Dr. Kenny Fink provided a timely update about the Red Hill Water Crisis.  Fellow RCOH member Dr. Chris Puttock shared information about a new partnership between Rotary and the UN to work with local communities and partners to protect, restore and sustain freshwater ecosystems.  Click here to read more about the partnership. Email Chris if you want to get involved with a clean water project here in Hawaii.

Come prepared with your questions!
February is going to be a great month with some exciting ways to engage with your fellow Rotarians and give back to the community!  We will be trying out a new concept at our lunch meeting next week.  Former Governor Neil Abercrombie will be our guest.  We will be hosting a Conversation with Neil Abercrombie.  Instead of a formal presentation, this is a great opportunity to come ask questions and engage in dialogue with this influential leader in our community.

Connect with new and old friends!
We have Paul Harris week with some fabulous hosts.  Paul Harris week is a throwback to the foundations of Rotary when meetings rotated between members’ offices to facilitate fellowship.  The concept behind Paul Harris week is to celebrate our members’ vocations and provide an opportunity for members to deepen their relationships with each other.  Instead of meeting at the OCC, we meet at each other's homes, businesses or in the community.

Make a difference...and new friends!
RAT Pack is getting us ready for the big RYSE service project.  Reese Liggett is recruiting 2-8 volunteers who can pitch in Mondays, Thursdays or Saturdays to do initial site prep.  Work starts at 8:30am.  Stay as long as you can.  Learn to use cool tools you never dreamed of and be proud of it!  These projects are a great way to serve the community and deepen friendships with fellow Rotarians.

Check below and in our upcoming Events Bulletins for more details and to sign up!
2024.02.06 - A Conversation with Governor Neil Abercrombie

A CONVERSATION WITH NEIL ABERCROMBIE

Neil has a unique perspective on Hawaii having served in all levels of government as a City Councilman, state legislator, governor and a 10 term Congressman. Known for his distinctive yellow checker cab, he is also the author of a thriller about a terrorist attack on congress.  Known for his prowess as a power lifter, his goal was to lift 200 abouts above his age and he achieved that on his 72nd birthday when he bench pressed 272 lbs. He is awaiting confirmation to the University of Hawaii Board of Regents where he earned his doctorate in American Studies.

SERVICE PROJECT - RYSE, Kailua
We have a big RAT Pack service project coming up!  Mark your calendars for the all hands on deck portions on Saturdays - February 24 and March 2.  Email Reese Liggett if you want to come pitch in ahead of time on Mondays, Thursdays or Saturdays.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT BY LINDA COBLE

Linda Coble joined the Rotary Club of Honolulu in 1987, when the Supreme Court ruled women should be included in the organization.  She had just retired from anchoring TV news, but the joy of interviewing has remained.  This time, Linda zeroes in on member Dave Shanahan’s story.

NO PARKING AT OUTRIGGER CANOE CLUB!
The Outrigger announced to us late last week that they will be closing their parking garage to everyone except OCC members for at least 8 months starting January 15.  We know this will inconvenience some and might present a significant challenge for others.  The board is looking for parking alternatives and reevaluating locations outside of OCC for our regular meetings.

Alternate Parking: There is usually ample parking around Kapiolani Park on Kalākaua Avenue at only 25 cents per half hour (coin meters - so bring quarters!) For those who can walk a little further, Jim Harrow alerted us to Paki Avenue on the mauka side of the park that has free parking with no time limit.  Please let President Joanna know if you have mobility issues or need assistance with parking and she will connect you with members who can provide assistance.  Click here to email her!
