A MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT BRIAN DUNKEL

Aloha kakou,

From what I have heard, and based on my own experience, we had another very successful Restaurant Week this quarter.  Attendees joining Judy Lind at Tango Cafe in Kaka’ako included Julia Allen, Marsha Bohnett, Ananda Ferreira, Nina Thai and our newest member Wesley Yamamoto, who will be formally inducted at our next regular meeting this Tuesday.  Those joining me at bEASTside Kitchen in Niu Valley included Jason Ebe, Lee LaBrash, Kent Reinker, Cherokee Rice, Ian Wetherell and Paul Saito.  And then I was also able to fill a last-minute opening slot at Jim Harrow’s house followed by a visit to Buzz’s Steakhouse in Kailua, where I shared a table with Mitch Weld, Rick Towell, and Tom Coyne, while a second large table included Jake Jacobs, HaiCha Lambert, Rick Tabor, Leslie Allen and Carolann Biederman.  Good food and great fellowship were shared by all.  Thank you to all who attended.

This week, a large contingent of members are heading to Japan to represent our Club for celebrations with one of our Sister Clubs in Kyoto and the conclusion of a Sister Club agreement with our newest partner, the Rotary Club of Osaka East.  Our delegation will include Paul Saito, Jim Harrow, Mitch Weld, Lucci Pinoliad, Rick Towill, Hiroko Dewitz, Tom Coyne, Leslie Allen and Hai Cha Lambert, along with several family members and friends.  Although I was not able to join this trip, I am confident that our Club will be well represented at both events.

This Tuesday, we will return to the Pacific Club to hear from Camille Nelson, dean of the UH Law school, who will present her plan for reimagining legal education by empowering law students as leaders for a more just and complex society.  I look forward to seeing many of you there for fellowship at 11:30.

It took more time than we planned but we got to be with kids at 4 elementary schools in the rural central Vietnam Highlands. They were charming, enthusiastic, grateful for the playground equipment, lunch boxes, pens and crayons. They gave us all our Rotary Moments! Definitely the highlight of this trip.
