District Governor, Ted Faigle's Reminder:
Hawai'i Rotary's annual District Conference (DISCON) for 2025 will be held from May 30 through June 1 at the Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra in Honolulu, Hawai'i. It is a time to be inspired by exciting General Session Speakers, Presenters, and House of Friendship exhibitors. It's also a time to be engaged with Rotarians across the State at a Friday Night Reception, Saturday Evening Gala, Rotary Fellowship events, Walk for PolioPlus, and a Genki Ball Toss Service Project. And, it's a time for a celebration of clubs' and members' accomplishments and a Celebration of Life.

Topic: The Current US Supreme Court and the Passive Virtues
Dean Soifer received his law degree from Yale Law School in 1972. He also holds B.A. cum laude (1969) and Masters of Urban Studies (1972) degrees from Yale.
Soifer began his law teaching career at the University of Connecticut in 1973, received a Law and Humanities Fellowship at Harvard University in 1976–77, and taught at Boston University from 1979–1993. He served as Dean of Boston College Law School from 1993–1998, and continued to teach at BC until 2003, when he became Dean of the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawai’i.
Soifer received Boston College’s Distinguished Senior Research Award and he was appointed as a Distinguished Scholar at the University of Wisconsin’s Legal Studies Institute. His book, Law and the Company We Keep (Harvard University Press, 1995) was awarded the Alpha Sigma Nu Triennial National Jesuit Book Prize in professional studies.
He has an extensive record of scholarly publications, presentations, and public service activities and he continues to teach primarily in the areas of constitutional law, legal history, legal writing, and law and humanities.
Craig Angelos was introduced as UH’s 24th Athletics Director on May 18, 2023 and officially takes over the post on June 5, 2023. Angelos comes to Manoa with nearly 30 years of senior leadership experience in intercollegiate athletics. Angelos has extensive experience overseeing student-athlete wellness and academic success, hiring head coaches, supervising men’s and women’s sports programs, fundraising, Title IX and NCAA compliance and developing facilities.

19th Annual Joint Memorial Service Call to Action Last Weekend in September
Here’s an event we could sure use your help with! This will be our 82nd year honoring our Nisei WWII Veterans. And up until last year, we’ve been short on the help needed to decorate the 2000 graves at Punchbowl. With enough help this is a fun family project. Please come join us and spread the word. Thank you.
Parking is free and open to the public, except for the reserved spaces on the Mall Drive.
On Saturday, look for the tables, under the tents, with buckets of flowers. Club 100 organizers will assign you to a section, hand you a map, bucket of flowers and flags and off you go, into history, in search of 100th Battalion soldiers. Volunteers are advised to bring sunscreen, a hat, and please stay hydrated. We’ll have water. And no worries, there will be plenty of folks available to help you, so just ask, if needed.
Sunday, September 29 there’s a 9:30am joint memorial service. The service is open to the public. It’s also televised on ‘Ōlelo.
Why September 29th?
The memorial service is held annually on the Sunday September 29 — the day in 1943 that Sgt. Shigeo “Joe” Takata of the 100th Infantry Battalion became the first Japanese American soldier killed in action in World War II. Sgt. Shigeo “Joe” Takata was hit by shrapnel and fought death long enough to point out the location of the enemy, action for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Sgt. Takata rests in eternal peace at Punchbowl.

DR. NAOTO T. UENO, MD, PhD, FACP
Director, University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center
Dr. Ueno has a strong background in translational breast cancer research in cancer biology, immuno-oncology, and molecular therapeutics. He is one of the leaders in conducting clinical research and early-phase clinical trials related to aggressive breast cancer and has led more than 50 clinical trials. Dr. Ueno has extensive experience in conducting both targeted therapy-related and immunotherapy-related clinical trials in phase I and II settings. He expanded his research to include several protein enzymes, including Mitogen-activated protein, Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (MAPK/ERK), and C-JUN N-terminal kinase, among other protein enzymes to determine their role in breast cancer progression and their applications in the development of targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Over the past 10 years, Dr. Ueno has successfully managed projects in breast cancer biology related to triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), and the tumor microenvironment.
Dr. Ueno is passionate about developing innovative therapies for advanced breast cancer. He started his career developing gene therapy for breast cancer and prepared for an Investigational New Drug application to conduct a study of gene therapies for metastatic breast cancer. His focus has been on novel combination therapy, IBC, and TNBC. Currently, Dr. Ueno is the lead national PI on antibody-conjugate drugs-related clinical trials.
