Our most recent regular meeting was another great success! Our very own Terry George “talked story” with us about his work as CEO & President of the Hawaii Community Foundation. We had a fully packed house, to the point that we actually had to tell a couple of folks that we did not have room for them to join us. The moral of that story, folks, is to make sure you sign up in advance for our meetings when you can. But of the many problems I could have as President of our illustrious club, I will take that one over just about any others. In addition to the number of guests and prospective members that we hope soon to welcome as part of our Rotary ‘Ohana, we had several current members join us that I had not seen for some time. Among others, I was excited to see that we were joined by Hiroko Dewitz, Amanda Ellis, Taro Fujisawa, Haumea Hebenstreit Ho, Nancy Pace, Jim Simonds, Mitch Weld, Nancy White and Gwen Yamamoto Lau. Thanks to everyone who made it such a great experience to be there.
Today’s Tradewind message was drafted somewhat late, as I am frantically making the final preparations for the Oahu RYLA 2026 youth leadership event up at Camp Erdman. Rick Tabor, Natasha Clarin (of the Rotary Club of Kapolei), Cherokee Rice and I were up at the camp yesterday getting the training hall set up for this weekend. Around forty high school students from across the island and more than twenty volunteers (Rotarians, Rotaractors and others) will be gathering tonight for this annual event, and we are excited! There will be presentations, activities including a beach clean up, as well as opportunities for the participants to put their leadership skills into action. On the off chance that any of you are up toward the North Shore on Sunday, the RYLA graduation ceremony begins at 1pm in the “Rotary Hall” A-frame building, and you are all welcome to come see what our Youth Services program is supporting.
CORRECTION:
This week we will meet at the Pacific Club on Tuesday, Feb. 3 with guest speaker Meredith Artley.
The week of February 10th there will be NO regular meeting at The Pacific Club. Instead, we will have a casual Pau Hana at J. Dolan’s in Kahalaon Thursday, February 12. (Thanks to Michelle Dolan for helping us to organize the event.) Soon, we will have a sign up available, and Lee will send out a notice for those who want to join us. As noted, it will be a casual opportunity to socialize with others in the Club while we share great food and drink. Later in February, we also hope to have a second Pau Hana at a UH Wahine Basketball game. Stay tuned for more information on that, and as always, I look forward to seeing many of you at our next event!

In February 2014 Club member Will J Henderson contributed $50,000 to the Foundation of the Rotary Club of Honolulu to create a scholarship fund in his name. The Foundation trustees added $50,000 to Will’s gift and additional funds have been donated by Club members through the Club’s annual Service Above Self Campaign. Will wanted the scholarships to go to average students rather than focusing on outstanding academic achievers. Will also wanted the fund to grow over time.
The Will J Henderson Fund is invested with the Maile Hale Endowment Fund, grows with annual campaign donations from Club members, and awards a $6,000 scholarship every year.
The Foundation of the Rotary Club of Honolulu asks for your financial support just once a year.
IN MEMORY OF PAST RCOH ROTARIAN
Paul Hemenway Altrocchi
June 8, 1932 - January 28, 2026
"The world we be a diminished place without him as he was a true renaissance man. Besides receiving his wonderful "Anecdote Mailings” he enriched my life by the example he set. To travel and explore the world like he did into his mid nineties is such a great inspiration. I had the pleasure to do this with him in the Philippines, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, We will all miss this wonder man."
- Don Anderson
"I met Paul- then a spry 75-year-old- in March of 2007 when he slept uncomplainingly next to me on makeshift beds made from school benches in a 2d grade classroom in a southern Leyte poor school in San Juan. We were together on my first international Rotary project and his work ethic, keen intellect, and love to share his wisdom garnered over many decades of professional and personal passion. He especially was a persuasive advocate of his conclusions that attribution of much the English language great literary canon to William Shakespeare’s was ill founded. He regaled all with the scholarship he brought to the subject. We thereafter served together on several other projects.
