We started this week with a quick but effective painting project at Palama Settlement. Unfortunately for my ability to contribute to the project, I was engaged most of the morning in support of a District 5000 Leadership Training event on Zoom. However, I was able to see the results of the team’s efforts once I arrived shortly before lunch. Thanks to our own Oliver Bartlmae, we did have more young volunteers from outside the Club than we had Rotarians. On Sunday, I joined Jessica Rich and Bub Wo for a lovely Easter service, which was the first I’ve ever attended that included a brass quintet. Then on Tuesday, we had an interesting presentation by Roger Morton of the City & County Department of Transportation Services, which focuses primarily on the safety of our local transportation systems through activities like maintenance of the many traffic signals at intersections across the island.
Before our meeting, I had a heartening chat with Richard Hunter and Don Anderson who had been discussing the current state of our Club. They attributed our current level to the quality of our speakers, the venue, the food and our leadership, including my own contributions. I pointed out that I have a lot of support from many others in elevating our Club experience, like the work that Judy Lind puts into driving our Program Committee to get those great speakers. On a more prosaic topic, I also want to thank Gigi Davidson for riding her electric bicycle to our meeting, as well as others like Dave Brittin and Mitch Weld for being dropped off or parking on the street, helping us to manage our impact on our excellent venue. And on the topic of engagement, I was very excited to see and visit with Ananda Ferreira, Terry George, Al Linton, Bob and Susan Robinson, Carol Sakata, Dave Shanahan, Phil Wright, and Lucci Pinoliad over the course of our meeting. Thank you to all who make our Club great.
Next week a group of us will be gathering with family and friends on Friday to watch the UH Men’s Volleyball team take on California State University at Northridge. We will have our own space within the Stan Sheriff Center including a catered meal, as well as a block of tickets to the game. We still have a few spots left, but today (Friday) is the last day to sign up, as we need to give UH Athletics our final numbers. Just as a reminder, because it is Pau Hana week, we will NOT be meeting at The Pacific Club again until April 21, when we will hear from Doug Harper, the Executive Director of Mālama Maunalua, who will give us an update on their efforts to restore and protect Maunalua Bay. I look forward to seeing many of you at both events.
