PRESIDENT CAROLANN BIEDERMAN
Aloha mai kākou,
Tuesday’s guest speaker, Ben Weitz, Executive Director of the Doris Duke Foundation’s Shangri La, illuminated how Doris Duke’s vision continues to enrich our world as a center for people, cultures and ideas. Ben noted Shangri La’s expanded community access for school children, convenings and performances by cultural practitioners and global artists. Many Club members had visited Shangri La previously, and now we’re even more eager to return.
We appreciate Adam Bogucki, Nancy White, Wes Yamamoto, Al Linton and Jim Simonds whose Club Service assistance created the positive energy for our meeting. Thank you to Bridget Townsend for inviting prospective member Leianne Pedro, Dave Shanahan for bringing his daughter Mary Evans and son Ryan, and to guests Keric Chin, Jill Loui and Drake Beil for joining us.
Marla Momi Musick, Director of Kokokahi, shared her gratitude for our Club: “Thanks to your hard work and dedication, we were able to clean our campus, strengthen community connections, and accomplish our goal of completely filling a 20-yard dumpster with overgrowth removed from Kokokahi. This achievement would not have been possible without the support of our incredible volunteers and community partners.”
Jessica Lani Rich invites you to the Celebration of Life for her husband Rick Texier on Saturday, August 15 at the Community Church of Honolulu, 2345 Nu‘uanu Avenue, visitation at 10:00 a.m., service at 11:00 a.m. Please wear blue as a tribute to Rick.
The District 5000 Conference is coming right up on August 21-23. Attendees will participate in a Community Service project - assembling hygiene kits for the U.S. Vets. You can help by bringing any of the following to our Club meeting on August 18: body wash, deodorant, shampoo, shaving cream, toothpaste, dental floss, mouthwash and razors.
Tomorrow’s Community Service project at Palama Settlement could use a few more volunteers to paint the exterior of the historic Rath Building. Remember, next week’s meeting is a pau hana social on Friday, August 14 at 5:00 p.m. at Kapono’s at The Lounge in Hawai‘i Kai.
