DR. NAOTO T. UENO, MD, PhD, FACP
Director, University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center
Dr. Ueno has a strong background in translational breast cancer research in cancer biology, immuno-oncology, and molecular therapeutics. He is one of the leaders in conducting clinical research and early-phase clinical trials related to aggressive breast cancer and has led more than 50 clinical trials. Dr. Ueno has extensive experience in conducting both targeted therapy-related and immunotherapy-related clinical trials in phase I and II settings. He expanded his research to include several protein enzymes, including Mitogen-activated protein, Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (MAPK/ERK), and C-JUN N-terminal kinase, among other protein enzymes to determine their role in breast cancer progression and their applications in the development of targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Over the past 10 years, Dr. Ueno has successfully managed projects in breast cancer biology related to triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), and the tumor microenvironment.
Dr. Ueno is passionate about developing innovative therapies for advanced breast cancer. He started his career developing gene therapy for breast cancer and prepared for an Investigational New Drug application to conduct a study of gene therapies for metastatic breast cancer. His focus has been on novel combination therapy, IBC, and TNBC. Currently, Dr. Ueno is the lead national PI on antibody-conjugate drugs-related clinical trials.

This year as we approach 'World Polio Day' we are facing additional challenges. There is fighting, destruction and lives
being lost in and around the world on a daily basis...
The ongoing crisis in Gaza has contributed to reduced routine
immunization rates and increased risk of vaccine preventable
diseases, including polio. The crisis also poses a significant
challenge to fully implementing disease surveillance and vaccination campaigns.
The number of polio cases are increasing in Afghanistan and
Pakistan. In late July, the detection of variant poliovirus type
2-in environmental samples and the confirmation a 10-month
-old child who has contracted polio in Gaza is a reminder to
us that as long as polio exists anywhere, it is a threat everywhere.
As a side note from your RCOH Admin - I would love to see each of us contribute at least $25 to help bring the numbers back down! We are SO close to the eradication of Polio!

Hawaii Innocence Project and other Significant Cases
The Hawai‘i Innocence Project (HIP), founded in 2005 at the William S. Richardson School of Law, fights for the freedom of those who have been wrongfully convicted and advocates for the prevention of future injustice. HIP is a law clinic and nonprofit with a mission to free prisoners who are factually innocent but who have been wrongfully convicted. Through the work of volunteers, attorneys, and law students, HIP strives to not only exonerate the innocent but to also reform the justice system to prevent innocent people from being convicted of crimes they didn’t commit.
HIP is a member of the Innocence Network, a collection of organizations across the nation which have joined the movement for justice and freedom. For more information about HIP, visit hawaiiinnocenceproject.org.

Hawai'i Rotary's annual District Conference (DISCON) for 2025 will be held from May 30 through June 1 at the Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra in Honolulu, Hawai'i. It is a time to be inspired by exciting General Session Speakers, Presenters, and House of Friendship exhibitors. It's also a time to be engaged with Rotarians across the State at a Friday Night Reception, Saturday Evening Gala, Rotary Fellowship events, Walk for PolioPlus, and a Genki Ball Toss Service Project. And, it's a time for a celebration of clubs' and members' accomplishments and a Celebration of Life.
