Last Saturday, we had a very successful “Rotarians at Work Day” at Hāmākua Marsh in Kailua. We had more than two dozen volunteers from our Club, along with another similar sized group from the Rotary Club of Kahala Sunrise and their Interact Club from Niu Valley Middle School and one member of the Rotary Club of Ala Moana. Our District Governor Nancy Cabral stopped by to visit, and we also had Lisa Marten, Executive Director and co-founder of Healthy Climate Communities (which manages the restoration work at the Marsh) join us. Thanks to Terry George, Tom Coyne, Dave Britten, Reese Liggett, Rich Proctor, Carolann Biederman, Kent Reinker and the large crew organized by Oliver Bartlmä and Jack Kunkel for helping us accomplish quite a bit of invasive vegetation removal and native plant seedling restoration.
I was very excited to see so many of our members join us for our Talk-Story event with Governor Josh Green, including some folks that I have not seen in a while. Thanks to Antonet Barut, Susan and Bob Robinson, Nancy and Greg Lui-Kwan, Nina Thai, former and future member Peg Jackson, former (and I hope future) member Diana Voncina and everyone else who came to the meeting. I especially want to thank the more than fifteen people – both members and guests – who heeded our call to carpool, walk, bike or be dropped off at The Pacific Club. Because of your consideration, we were able to keep our impact on the parking lot within our agreed limit. I heard many positive comments about the meeting, and I’m glad that we are able to have such incredible speakers visit our Club.
This weekend out at Camp Erdman we expect to have more than two hundred people, including many members of our Club, organized and managed by Don Anderson to tackle the devastating aftermath of the “Kona Low” storms out there. Tom, Reese and I, together with potential new Club member Daniel Chen, went up to the Camp on Wednesday to get a tour of the several projects that we will be helping with including replacing damaged flooring, removing mud and rocks from the open field and rebuilding play structures and fire pits. Those joining us from our Club are expected to include Reese, Shannon Melton, Rich, Gigi Davidson, Oliver, Ananda Ferreira, Bob Sumpf, Carolann, Mitch Weld, Kerri Van Duyne, Phil Wright, Nancy Youngren, Jim Harrow (and his pizza oven), Leslie Allen, Tom, Ian Wetherell, Jack and Christian Stockwell.
Next week at The Pacific Club, Miki Hardisty of Olelo Intelligence will be speaking to us about Artificial Intelligence and its impact in our current environment. The following week will be Restaurant Week. I look forward to seeing many of you at all of these future events.
