A MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT BRIAN DUNKEL

Aloha kakou,

I would like to thank Bob Sigall for inviting our most recent speaker, Dr. Jerris Hedges.  I had pleasant interactions before and after the meeting with Bob Borek, Nalani Blaisdell-Brennan, Sid Snyder, Jake Jacobs and his wife Frankie. I was also glad to see Richard Hunter and Alice Tucker.  I had a wonderful discussion with Alice in which she reminded me that she has been with the Manoa Valley Theater as a board member and patron for more than 50 years.  I told her that I saw the final performance of Side by Side by Sondheim at MVT, which Gigi Davidson also saw (although I did not have a chance to say hello after the show).

At this last meeting, we introduced a new feature of our pre-meeting slide show that I am calling “RCOH In the News”.  We highlighted pictures and articles featuring members of our club in newsletters and newspapers in the recent past.  The members noted this week were Lee LaBrash, Tom Coyne, Kandi George and Linda Coble.  I was also told (although I missed it myself) that Gwen Yamamoto-Lau was on Hawaii Public Radio earlier this week discussing the impact of changes to federal policies on solar energy projects in our state.  I encourage all members of the Club who notice other members (or even yourself) in local media reports to let me and Lee know, so that we can include them in future instances of “RCOH In the News”.

Also at the last meeting, I discussed with Bridget Townsend and Rick Tabor a new feature of the meetings that I am calling “RCOH In the Community”.  The purpose of this will be to give all members of the Club an opportunity to let the rest of us know about activities of importance that are happening in the Community or in their workplace.  This week, Rick announced that he is registering a group for the O‘ahu Out of the Darkness Community Walk.  Next week, Bridget will tell us about a bicycle event that will also be in September. If you have something you would like to share, please let me and Lee know in advance so we can add you to the agenda.

As a final note, I would like to thank Ian Wetherell, Jason Ebe, and Clif Purkiser who all accepted our Treasurer Lucci Pinoliad’s invitation to join the Club Finance Committee.

Remember that we will not have our regular Tuesday meeting at the Pacific Club next week.  (No meeting August 12.)  Instead, many members and guests will be meeting at La Mariana Sailing Club on Thursday, August 14 for a casual evening of conversation, pupus and drinks. Then on Saturday, August 16, we will have a service project at the Susannah Wesley Community Center in Kalihi.  I also want to give everyone advance notice that we will have alternate venues for lunch November 4th and November 11th.  Stay tuned for more details.

WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS!

Aloha All,

The Rotary Club of Honolulu has taken on a new community service project by helping the Susanah Wesley Community Center to upgrade their facilities.  For those of you who are not familiar with this facility, SWCC offers after school care for children in the community as well adult day care and many other vital needed services.  It has been a few decades since RCOH has helped here and with limited and diminished funding for these needed services it is time for us to do want we do best and help get this building repaired and cleaned up.

Start Date:

Saturday, August 16th at 8:30:

  • We will need as many power washers as possible so please respond to this email if you have or have access to a power washer.  If we can get 4 to 6 then we can most of the work completed in half a day.
  • There are many other areas that will need painting so bring your painting attire, wear a hat and gloves and also bring your water bottle.

Saturday, August 30th at 8:30:

  • Mostly painting and hopefully, if we enough people, completed the first stage in our project.
