A MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT BRIAN DUNKEL

Aloha kakou,

We had a healthy turnout on Tuesday for the Veterans’ Day event out at Barber’s Point.  In total, there were around two dozen Rotarians from four clubs in the District, with our contingent being the largest, I think.  Thanks to all of those from our Club who joined the festivities: Carolann Biederman, Greg Lui-Kwan, Nancy Lui-Kwan, Rick Tabor, Michelle Dolan, Lee LaBrash, Rich Proctor and Nancy Youngren.  After the ceremony, food and entertainment, we were given a tour of the US VETS facilities, including the kauhale “tiny homes” of Kama'oku Kalaeloa that they manage.  In addition to the celebration of veterans, Lee and I also had a wonderful opportunity to visit with Bob Robinson and Susan Robinson, where we got a tour of their lovely apartment at The Ivy in Hawaii Kai and spent time hearing (among other things) about the time they spent exploring English canals with Alice Tucker.

Many of you may already be familiar with the weekly show “Inspire You and Me” that our Director of Communications Jessica Lani Rich hosts and produces.   For those of you not familiar with this uplifting show, you will have a special reason to watch tomorrow evening’s presentation, as it will be an interview with yours truly, discussing what the Rotary Club of Honolulu is and does in the community.  It is a great opportunity for us to get our Club in front of those who might join us or benefit from our service work.  There may also be a musical surprise in store, but you’ll have to watch to see it.  Details are given below.

Coming up, we have a RAT Pack project tomorrow (Saturday) at Palama Settlement to prepare and paint the metal railings throughout the property.  There is still time to sign up or just come out and join us.   Lunch will be provided, as well as many opportunities to socialize with fellow Club members and a number of students that will be joining us from HPU.  Among others, I see that Paul Saito and his wife Sybil will be there to help with this signature project for our Club.  Finally, on Tuesday, our District 5000 Governor Nancy Cabral will be joining us to discuss many of the ways in which the District and Rotary International supports the work of all Rotary Clubs in Hawaii and how we can contribute to the work done throughout the District.  It looks like we already have a healthy group signed up for lunch including Nancy Pace, Carol Sakata, Bob Borek, Nancy White and Dawn Marie.  If you haven’t already, please do sign up to join us.  I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow at Palama Settlement and on Tuesday at the Pacific Club.
