MARCH 11 -19 2023 ROTARY OF HONOLULU PHILIPPINE PROJECT JOLOMAYNON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, DALAGUETE ON CEBU ISLAND, PHILIPPINES LOCATION: Our project is at Jolomaynon Elementary School in the Mountains above the coastal town of Dalaguete on southern Cebu Island, Philippines. PROJECT: The school is quite rundown and severely in need of help. In addition, it suffered extensive damage from a typhoon that struck in December 2021. We plan to build two classrooms, a faculty room, a raised assembly platform with a concrete apron plus other improvements. Daily work will involve: concrete making and pouring, laying concrete hollow tile, plastering, painting and landscaping. The cost of the project is estimated at $49,721 and will be covered by a gift from the Nan Chun Shin Foundation to the Foundation of the Rotary Club of Honolulu. LIVING CONDITIONS: This is a “camping out” type project. We will sleep on cots in classrooms with toilet facilities and bathing will be with buckets of water. COSTS: Participant financial responsibility will include your airfare (from $620+) to and from Cebu plus a participant fee of $250 which will cover meals, ground transportation, lodging and misc. costs. The night in Oslob and whale shark experience will have an additional expense which is unknown at this time. The optional sightseeing option will have a cost based on what we choose to do. MISC: Participants are expected to include Participants from the Rotary Club of Honolulu, Nan Construction, the Atherton student branch of the YMCA of Honolulu, the UH School of Engineering, young adults from Hiroshima Japan YMCA and members of the general Honolulu community. No special skills are required of participants, Skilled workers will be on site to direct our activities. What is required: general good health and a good attitude. While in Cebu City we will stay in the Cebu YMCA Hotel which is very basic. It is located in the heart of the city. |

Thursday, April 27th – Habilitat - Hosted by Jeff Nash Habilitat was founded in Hawaii in 1971 by Vinny Marino and is the largest capacity long term residential substance abuse treatment and intensive vocational training program. Habilitat is located on a 1.5 acre facility on Kaneohe Bay formerly known as the Bigelow Estate. The organization is a private 501c3 nonprofit funded by social enterprise, without dependence on government funding or insurance and is considered the gold standard in addiction treatment according to several Hawaii Judges. Habilitat operates 13 different work force development programs that all lead to employment at a living wage. Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke (she/her) is the State of Hawaiʻi’s 16th lieutenant governor, the third woman to hold the office, and the highest-ranking Korean American in a U.S. statewide position. Sylvia was first elected to the Hawaiʻi State Legislature in 1998, where she served until 2022. During her twenty-four-year tenure in the State House, she had many roles, most notably as Chair of the Finance Committee where she developed a reputation for bringing transparency and accountability to the State budget for over a decade. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Sylvia immigrated to Honolulu at the age of nine with her parents and siblings. She attended Queen Kaʻahumanu Elementary School where her 5th-grade teacher helped her learn English. She later graduated from Roosevelt High School and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Her first introduction to public service was in college when elected as one of the few female Presidents of the Associated Students of the University of Hawaiʻi. Following her undergraduate degree, she continued her education at the University of San Francisco School of Law. Throughout Sylvia’s career in public service, she has been recognized for her advocacy and leadership by many organizations including Hawaii Women Lawyers, Healthcare Association of Hawaii, Hawaii Technology Trade Association, Korean American Coalition, AARP Hawaii, Hawaiʻi Farm Bureau, Humane Society of the United States, and Hawaiʻi Foodbank as Chair of the Annual State Employees’ Food Drive. Lieutenant Governor Luke is leading the state’s broadband expansion efforts and the initiative for universal access to preschool, Ready Keiki, to support the education and futures of Hawaiʻi’s keiki. As a retired Major General with 34 years of service, Vares-Lum has held key roles addressing priority national security challenges in the region. COME JOIN OUR FIRST VOLUNTEER SERVICE PROJECT OF THE NEW ROTARY YEAR! Our first project of the new Rotary Year will be at Waikiki’s YO! House on two consecutive Saturdays, August 5 and 12. YO! Stands for youth outreach and is operated by Waikiki Health Center and Hale Kipa. Members are encouraged to participate in this hands-on project to upgrade this important facility that serves at-risk youth. Ther are opportunities to wash and paint the building, landscaping, housecleaning, assemble replacement shed, paint picnic tables and outdoor furniture, sort used clothing, other stuff! Come join us for a game day cookout with the residents of Hale Mauli'ola. Hale Mauli'ola is an innovative shelter serving houseless people on Sand Island. RCOH will provide the grindz. We need you to help run the grills, spend time with the residents and watch some football! RCOH volunteers will be working with IHS to provide a BBQ lunch for the residents, play games and provide fun and friendship for IHS guests at the shelter. On August 19th, the Institute for Human Services (IHS) is celebrating 45 years in the community with a Community Volunteer Day called Mālama Meetup.
The Institute for Human Services (IHS) is Hawai'i's leading organization in homelessness. With the largest shelters and medical respites on O'ahu, IHS is a safe place to sleep, get a hot meal, see a nurse, and receive housing support. They lead the state in behavioral health treatment for the most mentally ill patients on the streets, serving people who others will not.

Paul Harris Event at Palama Settlement to see the Peace Poles on Aug. 29th Hosted by Sam Aiona What is a Paul Harris Event? These meetings are a throwback to the beginnings of Rotary when members would rotate gatherings at each other's places of business. It's a great opportunity to deepen relationships with your fellow members. And have fun! In July, the Rotary Club of Honolulu gathered to dedicated two Peace Poles at Palama Settlement. The Peace Poles are adorned in 16 languages, 4 of those are Micronesian, with the powerful message, "May Peace Prevail on Earth." Rotarians and community members came together to celebrate the triumphs of peacebuilding and serve to inspire others to foster peace among people of diverse cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds.
