MARCH 11 -19 2023 ROTARY OF HONOLULU PHILIPPINE PROJECT JOLOMAYNON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, DALAGUETE ON CEBU ISLAND, PHILIPPINES LOCATION: Our project is at Jolomaynon Elementary School in the Mountains above the coastal town of Dalaguete on southern Cebu Island, Philippines. PROJECT: The school is quite rundown and severely in need of help. In addition, it suffered extensive damage from a typhoon that struck in December 2021. We plan to build two classrooms, a faculty room, a raised assembly platform with a concrete apron plus other improvements. Daily work will involve: concrete making and pouring, laying concrete hollow tile, plastering, painting and landscaping. The cost of the project is estimated at $49,721 and will be covered by a gift from the Nan Chun Shin Foundation to the Foundation of the Rotary Club of Honolulu. LIVING CONDITIONS: This is a “camping out” type project. We will sleep on cots in classrooms with toilet facilities and bathing will be with buckets of water. COSTS: Participant financial responsibility will include your airfare (from $620+) to and from Cebu plus a participant fee of $250 which will cover meals, ground transportation, lodging and misc. costs. The night in Oslob and whale shark experience will have an additional expense which is unknown at this time. The optional sightseeing option will have a cost based on what we choose to do. MISC: Participants are expected to include Participants from the Rotary Club of Honolulu, Nan Construction, the Atherton student branch of the YMCA of Honolulu, the UH School of Engineering, young adults from Hiroshima Japan YMCA and members of the general Honolulu community. No special skills are required of participants, Skilled workers will be on site to direct our activities. What is required: general good health and a good attitude. While in Cebu City we will stay in the Cebu YMCA Hotel which is very basic. It is located in the heart of the city. |
