Philippine Service Project in Calauan, Laguna on Luzon Island

Dates: April 7 – 16 (10 days) Cost: $550 plus airfare

Description of Philippine Project:

Our project in the Philippines this year is the construction of a vocational training center in Calauan, Laguna on Luzon.

Tropical Storm Ondoy produced record rainfall and floods in September 2009 that devastated Metro Manila. About 5,000 families were relocated to a resettlement site near Calauan. The relocation process has been fraught with problems. The most pressing need for the relocated families is, however, livelihood training and employment.

Many organizations, both private foundations and government units, are working to meet critical needs in the area. The Salesian Fathers of Don Bosco is one of the many agencies involved in providing assistance and they have been assigned to the Southville 7 area. They are already involved in providing vocational skills and competencies to the out of school young people of Southville 7. The Salesian Fathers have set up a shoe making facility, a mushroom production “farm,” and “schools” for other basic technical courses.

They have been given property by Ayala Land and the plan is to build a vocational training center on the site. The Center will initially house a welding and a small motor repair training facility. We have applied to Rotary International for a matching grant that will provide tools and equipment for the Center.

Danny Urquico, CEO of Child and Family Service, Philippines, will be the “on the ground” coordinator. He has been a great “host” in the past and has found accommodations at a Retreat Center very near the project site – 15 minutes away. It is very quiet and simple but it is ideal for a large group. There are lots of areas in which to walk around. It has a library, a large multipurpose hall and a dining area. We anticipate sleeping four (4) to a room.

Following our work project we will do some sightseeing in the area and visit Taal V olcano.
